Nightscape in Montreal

Nightscape is making it's world premier tonight at the Montreal Comicon/Horrorfest. And finally there is a new trailer for the film! Check it out! I absolutely love the soundtrack- it's been stuck in my head for days.

Traveling
I flew in to Montreal yesterday and met up with the director (David Edwards) and lead actor (Joshua St. James) here in Quebec. I know ZERO French, which makes me feel like a jerk trying to navigate this city. Last night we met up with a couple other filmmakers, including Todd Freeman (Cell Count) for drinks. Jet lagged (in favor of staying up late), we were out until early in the morning. I rounded out the night with a couple hours of Skype video calling, and finally got to sleep around 5am local time.

This morning we all met for brunch and were joined by Nightscape actor (Jorge Madrid) who flew in from Paris. Now that I've downed a couple cups of coffee, I need to get a little work done and then take a nap. Then around 4pm we're off to the convention to pick up our event passes. Looking forward to people watching and movie watching tonight. More updates from the premier to come!

Nightscape Premiers at ComiCon

I am very, very excited to announce that Nightscape will premier at the Montreal  ComiCon Horrorfest in September! Nightscape is a sci-fi horror/supernatural thriller film in which I play the leading lady, shot exactly a year ago.

I still haven't seen an updated trailer for the film, but as soon as one is released (any day now?) I'll post it here.

For those who are following this blog, be prepared for a flurry of Nightscape News as it becomes accepted to more festivals, and promotion gets underway.

EDIT 8/21/12: I will be attending the festival in Montreal to promote Nightscape this September!  See you there? Official announcement is HERE. You bet I'll be blogging from the festival, just like Tribeca 2011.

Shoulda been a cowboy

Setting up a shot for Gold Creek

At 7am on March 30, Gold Creek wrapped principal photography. Keeping a schedule of 16 hour work days (allowing only 8 hours for travel, sleep, breakfast, et cetera) for 13 straight days is exhausting. I am not sad for this project to be over, although I am glad to have had the experience. How often do you get the chance to make a western/horror/bigfoot/period piece movie? Yeah.. I'm pretty sure we just invented a brand new sub-genre.

Living and breathing a character for nearly all my waking hours for two solid weeks really allowed me to dive deep into the character, her world, and her relationships. As an actor I have learned a lot and increased my ability to create depth that the camera can pick up.

There happens to be quite a few talented musicians on this set including Danbert Nobacon from the band Chumbawamba ("I get knocked down, but I get up again, no body gonna keep me down!")



Other musicians include Terry Hardesty, a songwriter and long time friend of country music legend Merle Haggard.

An update from the set of Gold Creek in Winthrop/Twisp, Washington. Make no mistake, this is a straight up horror film about Bigfoot. It's not pretending to be anything else. That being said, it's going to be so cool when it's finished!

St. Patrick's Day some of us had some free time so we went into town in search of a Reuben sandwich and Irish Car Bombs. Success!

Day Zero

It has only just began but the last 24 hours have already been an adventure! It took me over seven hours to make the drive to Twisp, WA, where basecamp for the shoot is located. The drive through the Cascades was stunning. These photos don't do the mountains justice (I was not looking where I was pointing the camera when I snapped these- I was focused on the road).

Around hour five, I ran into some trouble. I hadn't seen a gas station for hours, it was beginning to snow, the sun was setting and I was running on empty. Luckily I found a restaurant with a pump just in the nick of time!

Upon arriving at basecamp, it was to the wardrobe dept. immediately for fittings and contracts.

My room for the next two weeks:

As I was falling asleep I heard yip yips, movement, and howling. Pretty sure a wolf pack was right outside my window!

That was yesterday.

Today at 6:00am the cast and crew began shooting. I'm not on the schedule until tomorrow morning, and since today is St. Patrick's Day, some us might head on up to Winthrop for some holiday food and beverage at the old-timey tavern.

Meanwhile, I'm making use of my time off by finishing a research paper for school, and running lines.

Into the woods...

I have been very busy with little time to post about anything lately. I have been finishing up two business degrees and working as a Marketing and Generalist intern at the Business Outreach Program at PSU. I have really been enjoying this work, while fitting shoots and auditions in between it all.

Tomorrow morning I take off on a 7 hour drive to The Middle Of Nowhere in very Northern Washington to shoot a western period horror film for a couple of weeks. There's going to be horses, guns, burning buildings, and all sorts of Oregon Trail fun! I've got to learn some native Salish phrases for my character on the drive up there. Should be quite the adventure! I hope I'll have time to post some updates and BTS photos while up north.

Nightscape ADR

I spent two days in January in the studio doing ADR work with Jason Edwards, sound designer on Nightscape. What is ADR I hear you ask? It stands for Automatic Dialogue Replacement. It's needed when the sound guy screws up. Just kidding! It's to get cleaner, better quality dialogue reads, to get an alternate line delivery, or to dub over OTS (Over The Shoulder) shots with different dialogue if the scene was altered drastically in editing. Basically, it makes the movie better and gives the director more options in the editing room.

It was kind like playing a video game or Operation because of the precision required for a good take. I also had to do things like breathe, sigh, sniff, scream and cry, matching it all to the film. It was fun resurrecting Kat's southern accent for a while, and was the first time I got to see the cut together scenes. It looks so good! Still needs color correction, SFX, titles, and the rest of the audio FX. Definitely does NOT look like an "indie" film. (Not that that's a bad thing.) I can't wait!

The End (of 2011)

It is late December -"dead" time for film in Portland- and the annual worries about running out of money and having to find a "real" job are creeping in again. But that's the way this kind of work goes... you never know if and when you will see your next pay check, or for how much that will be. I've just got to ride this out and count on things picking back up here soon.

I cannot wait to say goodbye to this year. It has been an absolute blast, but I am looking forward to new adventures in 2012. The coming year is going to be one of transition, risk, opportunity, and new beginnings. There is already a lot on the horizon for 2012, which I will talk more about later. (By the way, Rid Of Me has had it's run at Living Room Theater extended AGAIN so if you're in Portland and haven't had a chance to see it yet, there is still time!)

I will leave you with the just released trailer for Lions Eat Their Own, which I am in... covered in blood and glow-paint. As mentioned in an earlier post, I was head butted pretty hard while on set but it makes a good story (that's not where the blood came from). Rid Of Me opens in Portland!

FINALLY! Check it out Portlanders!

Rid of Me will open at Living Room Theaters DECEMBER 16! (I know it says 15th on the website.. that's the private night... It opens to the public on the 16th!!)

This film has been on quite the journey. I encourage ALL OF YOU in Portland to see it while it plays... I do not know if it will be playing for 1 week or 2... I suggest checking out the showtimes once they are posted.

Living Room Theater lets you order food and drinks to enjoy during films. Also, on Mondays and Tuesdays, shows are only $5! 21+ after 7pm.

Today news broke that Rid Of Me, (Dir. James Westby, Starring Katie O'Grady) in which I had a supporting role in, has made a deal with Phase 4 to do an "agressive theatrical release" of the film!

Nightscape: It's a Wrap!

Today we wrap filming on Nightscape! My feelings are bittersweet. Although it is great to have it done, working on that film for the past month was a great gig with talented people who were a pleasure to work with.

The last week of filming has been extra exciting filled with car stunts with a pro driver: I've been the passenger in a car pulling 180 degree turns, flying down windy roads backwards skidding into a field, racing other cars, near head on collision with a semi, and more. Two days ago we got to set off explosions, and last night we crashed a car over a cliff. What a blast!

Lions Eat Their Own

Spent the last 3 nights in the woods filming the teaser trailer for a horror film. (See still above). Blood, torture, paint, and more! One shot is of me getting headbutted by Jack (played by KC Guyer), but while filming he slipped and got me for real. Ouch! When the trailer is cut I'll post it here.

Nominations?

WOW! Blogger Scott Feinberg has made well informed predictions of who will be nominated for Academy Awards in the past, and recently released a forecast for 2011. Guess what?? It includes Rid Of Me for Best Actress (Katie O'Grady), Best Supporting Actress (Orianna Herman), and Best Original Screenplay (James Westby)! Rid Of Me actors up against big names and fantastic films!? Whether or not this forecast is accurate, it is still flattering and the whole cast and crew of Rid Of Me should be proud!
