Some photos from a test shoot for an upcoming project by Jason Edwards and Patrick Neary at Stage 13 in Portland. The plan is to rotoscope the characters and add cartoon/comic book like backgrounds so the entire thing looks animated! I've never been turned into a cartoon before... I can't wait to see how the processed footage looks!

Recently this winter I ventured on a hike in the beautiful Oregon woods with two photographers, one of whom is David Keller, a fellow marketing student (oh, did I tell you I added marketing as a 2nd major?) and aspiring filmmaker. He was shooting film and the above portrait is from that day. (Oh! It's the shirt again! Bonus points to anyone who can count all the times this shirt appears in my blog...)

I had my digital camera with me and took some shots of the landscape. I'm pretty excited about them, they will make great studies for landscape paintings later. Don't be fooled... I can photograph nature alright but couldn't take a good portrait if my life depended on it!

Nightscape ADR

I spent two days in January in the studio doing ADR work with Jason Edwards, sound designer on Nightscape. What is ADR I hear you ask? It stands for Automatic Dialogue Replacement. It's needed when the sound guy screws up. Just kidding! It's to get cleaner, better quality dialogue reads, to get an alternate line delivery, or to dub over OTS (Over The Shoulder) shots with different dialogue if the scene was altered drastically in editing. Basically, it makes the movie better and gives the director more options in the editing room.

It was kind like playing a video game or Operation because of the precision required for a good take. I also had to do things like breathe, sigh, sniff, scream and cry, matching it all to the film. It was fun resurrecting Kat's southern accent for a while, and was the first time I got to see the cut together scenes. It looks so good! Still needs color correction, SFX, titles, and the rest of the audio FX. Definitely does NOT look like an "indie" film. (Not that that's a bad thing.) I can't wait!

TOASTED

The End (of 2011)

It is late December -"dead" time for film in Portland- and the annual worries about running out of money and having to find a "real" job are creeping in again. But that's the way this kind of work goes... you never know if and when you will see your next pay check, or for how much that will be. I've just got to ride this out and count on things picking back up here soon.

I cannot wait to say goodbye to this year. It has been an absolute blast, but I am looking forward to new adventures in 2012. The coming year is going to be one of transition, risk, opportunity, and new beginnings. There is already a lot on the horizon for 2012, which I will talk more about later. (By the way, Rid Of Me has had it's run at Living Room Theater extended AGAIN so if you're in Portland and haven't had a chance to see it yet, there is still time!)

I will leave you with the just released trailer for Lions Eat Their Own, which I am in... covered in blood and glow-paint. As mentioned in an earlier post, I was head butted pretty hard while on set but it makes a good story (that's not where the blood came from). The teaser trailer is only 50 seconds long so take a minute and check it out!

Switching gears from film for a minute here... My band Monster-Sized Monsters has officially announced our new drummer: Chad Sixkiller. We are excited to have him on board. He is bringing a new dynamic, full sound to the band and we think this will be a very good direction for us. We also were written up in SSG Music as one of 10 Portland bands to watch for! FINALLY! Check it out Portlanders!

Rid of Me will open at Living Room Theaters DECEMBER 16! (I know it says 15th on the website.. that's the private night... It opens to the public on the 16th!!)

This film has been on quite the journey. I encourage ALL OF YOU in Portland to see it while it plays... I do not know if it will be playing for 1 week or 2... I suggest checking out the showtimes once they are posted.

Living Room Theater lets you order food and drinks to enjoy during films. Also, on Mondays and Tuesdays, shows are only $5! 21+ after 7pm.

So on Friday, I was sitting with the band in the studio mixing room at Scenic Burrows in NW Portland, listening to the unmixed version of our latest track destined to be the end credits theme for upcoming film Nightscape, when our drummer Jeff said, "Hey your picture is in the paper."

To which I replied, "What?!!"

Then he showed me the following article. (I assure you the picture makes perfect sense in context).

Tonight is the last night to catch the show, I will be there tonight to check it out for myself!

AnOther Magazine (Scanned Images)

A while ago I did a photo shoot/story for AnOther Magazine. I posted a blog HERE at the time. It's taken me ages, but I finally got around to getting the pages from the magazine scanned. For the shoot, we traveled all around the outskirts of Portland, Oregon from abandoned buildings, beaches, and space ships to magic overgrown gardens. It was nice to be roughed up, dirty, and punk rock for this shoot vs. normal shoots where every hair has to be in the right place. Here are a few pages from the spread that I am in:

The past few weeks have been busy- school started up again. Five months left until I've got my Business Degree! Right now I've got a big case of not-being-motivated-for-school. I'd rather focus on film work! I've been auditioning and going to callbacks lately, we'll see if anything comes of it. A couple weeks ago I did a Nintendo shoot... getting paid to play video games definitely falls in the PLUS category of life. I also have at least two projects lined up for the coming months, but I *can't* tell you what yet! I'd rather tell you when I can also link the post to the project's website, provide photos or show video clips. So you're just going to have to wait.

Nightscape: It's a Wrap!

Today we wrap filming on Nightscape! My feelings are bittersweet. Although it is great to have it done, working on that film for the past month was a great gig with talented people who were a pleasure to work with.

The last week of filming has been extra exciting filled with car stunts with a pro driver: I've been the passenger in a car pulling 180 degree turns, flying down windy roads backwards skidding into a field, racing other cars, near head on collision with a semi, and more. Two days ago we got to set off explosions, and last night we crashed a car over a cliff. What a blast!

OK, so I've been working on a film called Nightscape. I play the female lead named Kat. It's a supernatural thriller with car chases and monsters, as well as strong and interesting characters. 48 Hour Film Festival (Yes Another!)

Recently I participated in another 48 Hour Film Festival, this time shooting with Anthony Statham and Anthony Lopez. Too many people worked on this to list. It was a fun, playful, and creative (not to mention hectic and stressful) shoot. The film is from the perspective of a hotel bathtub as it describes all the crazy stuff it has witnessed over the years. I play a punk who takes everything for granted and doesn't really care about anything. That's my interpretation at least. Anyway, here's the YouTube, enjoy!

A few weeks ago photographer Parker Fitzgerald and make up artist Caprice Hammon and I headed out to the beautiful gorge to shoot entirely with film and Polaroid using multiple vintage cameras. Here are the results. I must say, I am extremely impressed and Parker is a superb photographer with a clear vision and knows how to get just what he's looking for.

So, remember the Oregon State Lottery commercial I did a couple months back? Well, now they've launched a website where you can remix audio clips/samples from when we were shooting, and make your very own song!

Film Festivals

Tonight was a screening of "The Curio" a 22 minute short by Dicky Dahl wherein I play the character "Cigarette Girl." It screened as part of PIFF or the Portland International Film Festival. I got to be in the audience of this screening, which was held in the Portland Art Museum's theater. Boy my legs were shaking! It looked great on the big screen and everyone involved did a great job!

Tomorrow is a screening of a 6 minute short for the 48 Hour Film Festival. The concept behind the 48hr FF is each film crew/team gets 48 hours to write a script, shoot it, edit it, score it, and submit it. It also has to use specific props, a line of dialouge that is given, and a category that is assigned. This year the overall theme was "Go Green." In this beautiful short, (directed by Bryan Hiltner) I play a late teens/early 20's girl who's father just died. I'm not going to explain it all so if you want to see it, check out the video below! OR if you want to see it on the big screen, come to the Hollywood Theater tomorrow at 7pm. Tickets are $7, but will probably sell out.

Timbers Update!

The Portland Timbers billboards, of which I am on a few are great. I am enjoying them, and I love how serious Timbers fans are. I have fierce local pride and I feel that the Timbers represent the citizens of this city better than any other team out there, so count me a fan!

I have also learned a lot about my family's connection with the Timbers from 25+ years ago. My mom has pictures of her and all of the Timbers team from a long time ago. I guess she knew them pretty well. I only learned this after doing the photo shoot when it came up in conversation over the winter holidays.

Also, I have been told that another one of the billboards I am on is up on Canyon Rd. on the way to Beverton. Can anyone find this? I want a picture! Send it to emilygalash AT yahoo DOT com

Lastly, these huge billboards have gotten some negative press as well. Aparantly they are TOO BIG! Pshhhhh I say..... But it is true, here is the news clip on local KGW channel 8 covering the story.

Slippage (continued)

Everyone says the Fall and Winter film and print markets here in Portland are the "Slow" times. But I am busy filming, auditioning, and booking job after job. Recently, all of the above happened on in one day.

I'll share what jobs I've booked/shot after the end product comes out. It's better when I can SHOW you.

We wrapped up filming on Slippage for the year (we resume in January 2011). We ended on a very cold and rainy night in the middle of a spooky forest.

My latest guitar project: A conversion of an acoustic student guitar into a wicked cool resonator guitar.

^Before. I began with a student guitar because I had no idea what I was doing so it was low risk. Here all I've done so far is remove the strings ad tuning pegs.

^ Next I took a putty knife and thin saw blades and began to remove the face of the guitar.

^ I also needed to remove the fretboard and neck.

^ After removing the face of the guitar, I measured and cut a hole to fit the diameter of the resonator cone that will be placed inside.

^ This is a pot lid with the handle removed. It will make an excellent resonator cone!

^ Holding it in place you can get the feeling of how it will fit.

NOTE: when assembling this guitar I had not seen a diagram of which way the cone should face, pointed up or down. I figured down would have the best tone because I could get a good ring when I hit it.) Turns out this is not the way these guitars are built, BUT mine way totally worked and I am glad I did it the way I did.

Here's how I attached it: I took a coffee canister (ya know that metal coated cardboard stuff?) and cut the top off so that all I used was about 3/4 of the height of the can and the end with the bottom of the can on it. I then made cuts about every inch or so all the way around the can and fanned them out like an octopus. These became the tabs I glued down to the bottom of the guitar. I placed the cone (point down) on top of the former bottom of the coffee can and screwed it down. (Making sure it would end up centered in the fuller part of the guitar body.) Also, I made sure that once glued down, the entire height of the combined cone and coffee can is just a hair below the height of the guitar.

^ Fast forward and I have filled in the original sound hole with leftover face wood from the cutout I made. I painted the body. I covered the cutout with metal mesh from a broken bird feeder screen. The ring is the ring from the coffee can. The original bridge is on there (although I trimmed it up a bit.) Also I used a tin can to use as an echo chamber/amplifier that goes OVER the strings. Now I'm attaching the neck. At this point I have no idea if this will work AT ALL since I can't hear how it sounds until the strings are on it, so the guitar has to be completely assembled.

^ I added these sound holes to make the guitar louder. It worked!

^Signature, guitar name (Abraham) and "FOUR" Indicates what number of guitar build/customization this is for me. This is my 4th guitar project I've finished.

^ Here's a close up on the tail piece. It is made out of a tin can also. I drilled 6 holes in it to run the strings through. I swear, I could probably make an entire guitar out of a tin can!

The end! I will be showing this guitar (and others) in a gallery in St. Johns/North Portland in October.

After filming my band's music video we went on tour through California. Our Tour Blog has all the details of our adventure!

I hung out/helped out on another music video shoot which took place on Sauvie Island.

I started filming an independent film titled Slippage. I play the lead female character. We still have stuff to shoot in October and January, but I will keep you posted.

Today I am running my first race (besides track in middle school). It's called the Worrier Dash and is a short 3.15 miles BUT the course is full of 14 obstacles! I can't wait, this should be fun.

We have learned everything we know by trial and error, feeling, and the internet, and have come a long way. Kicking off the future (meaning a new album and a California tour next month) is our first ever music video! Directed and edited by the fantastic Mr. Fee. Please check it out.

In the last couple weeks I've shot two different music videos.

The first is for the band Ramona Falls. The crew was awesome. It was demanding but that's how it always goes, right? Directed by Cullen Hoback.

The second was for my own band Monster-Sized Monsters. Again I worked with Ben Fee who directed and will edit it. It was my bandmates' (Hannah Armstrong and Calum Barrick) first time really doing any sort of filming. I think they enjoyed themselves (most of the time)!

Both of these projects are in their post production phase, and when they are cut I will of course post the videos here.

In other news... Auditions, auditions, auditions.... maybe those will lead somewhere!

Are things picking up?

Worked on a commercial destined for Industry use on Sunday. Not much of a part but oh well! Since I recently quit my stable "day-job" (so that I am free to pursue acting more seriously), I needed to take the job to keep up an income! I will probably never see the finished clip.

I feel as if 2010 will be a good year for film. Many things seem to be in the works, it feels like a lot is about to happen. So, world, I am ready!

On another note, my band Monster-Sized Monsters is in the finishing stages of mixing our new album. We also have a show coming up in February in Portland:

This has sparked heated debate on YouTube apparently. People really seem to attach themselves emotionally (positively and negatively) to this commercial. People are so passionate about their views and a video such as this can bring them to blows. It is really quite amazing.

I need to clarify a few things.
1) That is not a hitler salute, that is a part Native American woman mimicking the Sacajawea statue behind her. [Actually, I was supposed to do that shot, but since I have blond hair and blue eyes they thought it would come off too Nazi-ish and therefore replaced me.]

2) Yes, there are short flashes of two guys kissing. Get over it. Levi's was founded in San Fransisco, and this is NOT a "stunt" but a reference to it's foundations as a company.

3) Walt Whitman (who's poem is being read) was probably a closeted homosexual who would not have minded his poem being used in this add.

After all that, YouTube deactivated the account that originally posted the add, which is too bad, because that was a high quality video. Posted here is a lesser quality version of it so you can see the whole add.

As a freshman high school I worked very part time as an independently contracted source for Look-Look magazine. A few photographs of mine were published in their magazine, and used on Virgin mobile's website. This lead to interviews with Reader's digest, The Portland Tribune, and the Wall Street Journal about working for LL. Since then, those interviews have ended up in marketing textbooks, and thus I have been mentioned in books, tossed in with examinations of the company itself.
